What a packing slip is for
The packing slip is the customer's checklist when the box arrives and your own check before it leaves. If an item is missing, the slip shows what was packed and who checked it, which shortens the conversation about refunds and re-sends.
- Opening check for the customer
- Pick-and-pack check for your team
- A note per parcel when one order ships in several boxes
- Gift orders, where the price should stay hidden
Packing slip, packing list and delivery note
A packing slip is mostly used by online shops and sits inside the parcel. A packing list in export shipping is a longer document with weights, dimensions and package marks for customs and the carrier. A delivery note travels with business deliveries and is signed by the receiver as proof of delivery; this site has a separate delivery note generator with signature lines. None of them is an invoice.
Tips for fewer wrong orders
Print the slip before you pick the goods and tick each line as it goes in the box. Write the parcel count on the slip, for example "box 1 of 2", in the notes field when an order is split. Keep item names identical to your product listing so customers recognise them, and add a short return or contact line in the notes so the customer knows whom to call.
