Grade calculator: course grade and final exam score needed

Most courses do not average every mark equally. Homework might count for 20% of the grade, quizzes 15%, a midterm 25% and the final exam 40%, while other teachers simply add up points. This calculator handles both. Enter each assignment, quiz or exam with the score you got and what it was out of, add the weights from your syllabus if the course uses them, and see your grade so far. Then enter how much the final counts and the grade you are aiming for to find the score you need on the final exam.

Quick answer

A weighted grade is each score as a percentage times its weight, added up and divided by total weight. Homework 88% (weight 20), a quiz 84% (weight 15) and a midterm 76% (weight 25) give 82%. If the final counts 40% and you want 85% overall, you need (85 − 82 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 89.5% on the final.

Each item needs a weight in percent, as in your syllabus. Empty rows are ignored.

Enter at least one score to see your grade.

How to use the Grade Calculator

  1. Choose Weighted if your syllabus gives each part a percentage, or Points if the course adds up points.
  2. For each assignment, quiz or exam, enter the score and what it was out of, and its weight in the weighted method.
  3. Read your current grade, based on the items you have entered so far.
  4. Under Final exam, enter how much the final counts and your target grade to see the score you need.

Weighted grades versus points

In a weighted course, each category has a share of the final grade, and the number of points inside it does not matter. A 10-point quiz and a 100-point project can count the same if both categories carry 15%. In a points course, every point counts equally, so a 200-point exam weighs twice as much as a 100-point one. Check the syllabus or ask the teacher which method applies, because the same marks can give quite different grades. If a category such as homework has many items, you can enter its average once with the category weight, or enter each item with an equal share of that weight.

Your grade so far, before every weight is used

Halfway through a term you have only some of the marks. The calculator divides by the weight you have entered, so after 60% of the course at an average of 82%, it shows 82%, not 49.2%. That is your standing on the work done so far. If the weights you enter add up to more than 100%, the calculator warns you, as that usually means a weight was typed twice. Extra credit is allowed: a score of 105 out of 100 is counted as 105%.

The score you need on the final

If the final exam counts for w% of the grade and everything before it stands at your current grade, the score you need is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With a current grade of 82%, a final worth 40% and a target of 85%, that is 89.5%. If the answer is above 100%, the target cannot be reached on the final alone without extra credit; if it is zero or below, you have already secured it. You can also type a current grade directly, for example the one on your school portal, instead of entering every item.

Letter grades and other systems

Schools turn percentages into letters, GPA points or bands in different ways. A common American scale puts an A at 90% and above, but many schools use plus and minus grades or other cut-offs, and universities in the Gulf, the UK and elsewhere use their own bands. Use the cut-offs in your own syllabus to read the result. For Saudi university admission, where the high school average, Qudurat and Tahsili are combined, the weighted percentage calculator offers common preset weights.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Turn each score into a percentage, multiply it by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights. 88% at 20, 84% at 15 and 76% at 25 give 4,920 ÷ 60 = 82%.

What do I need on my final exam to get an A?

Use (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 82% now, a final worth 40% and a 90% target, you need (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.4 = 102%, so 90% is out of reach without extra credit.

Why is my grade different from a simple average of my scores?

Because the categories carry different weights, or because tests are worth more points. A low quiz mark moves a weighted grade less than a low exam mark does.

Can I enter points instead of percentages in the grade calculator?

Yes. Enter the points you got and what the item was out of, such as 42 out of 50. For a percentage score, leave the out-of field at 100.

What if the weights in my syllabus do not add up to 100?

Before the end of the course that is normal, as some items are still to come. If they add up to more than 100, check for a weight entered twice or extra credit categories.
