Percentage calculator

Four everyday percentage questions on one page: what is 15% of 200, what percent is 30 of 200, how much did a price go up or down, and what is the price after a 20% discount. Type the numbers and the answer appears straight away, with the formula beside it.

Quick answer

To find X% of a number, multiply the number by X and divide by 100, so 15% of 200 is 30. To find a percentage change, subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100, so going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase. The calculator below does both, plus what percent one number is of another and the price after a discount.

Formulas used

  • X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y
  • Percent = part ÷ total × 100
  • Change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100
  • After discount = amount × (1 − X ÷ 100)

How to use the Percentage Calculator

  1. Pick the box that matches your question.
  2. Type the two numbers. You can use commas, decimals and Arabic digits.
  3. Read the result on the right of the box. Each box works on its own, so you can use several at once.

How to work out a percentage of a number

To find X% of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 200 is 15 ÷ 100 × 200 = 30. The same method gives a tip, a commission or a deposit: a 10% deposit on AED 85,000 is AED 8,500.

Percentage increase and decrease

Percentage change compares a new value with an old one: subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. If rent rises from AED 80,000 to AED 88,000, the change is 8,000 ÷ 80,000 × 100 = 10%. A fall gives a negative result: a price that drops from 100 to 80 has fallen by 20%. Note that a 20% fall followed by a 20% rise does not bring you back to the start, because the second percentage is taken from a smaller number.

Discounts, mark-ups and VAT

To take a discount off a price, multiply it by (1 − discount ÷ 100); a 25% discount on AED 200 leaves AED 150. To add a mark-up or a tax, multiply by (1 + rate ÷ 100); 5% VAT on AED 1,000 gives AED 1,050. For UAE VAT, including working back from a total that already includes VAT, use our VAT calculator.

Percentage points versus percent

When a rate moves from 3% to 4%, it has gone up by one percentage point, but by 33% in relative terms. Banks and news reports often use percentage points for interest rates, so check which one is meant before comparing offers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% of a number?

Multiply the number by 0.20. For example, 20% of 450 is 450 × 0.20 = 90.

How do I work out a percentage of a total?

Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. If you scored 42 out of 50, that is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

If a rate goes from 5% to 7%, it rose by 2 percentage points, but by 40% in relative terms (2 ÷ 5 × 100). Use the percentage increase calculation above for the relative figure.
