What a HEIC file is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default since iOS 11. It keeps the same picture quality as JPG in roughly half the space, which is why Apple chose it. The catch is support: Windows needs an extra codec to open HEIC, and many upload forms, older editors and printing services accept only JPG or PNG. That is when you need to convert.
Where HEIC to JPG helps in the Gulf
Visa, Emirates ID, iqama, university and job portals usually ask for a JPG or PNG photo or scanned document, often with a size limit. If you took the photo on an iPhone, convert it to JPG first. If the portal also sets a maximum size such as 100 KB or 200 KB, run the JPG through our image compressor or resize tool afterwards.
Quality, size and orientation
A JPG made from HEIC is usually larger than the original, because JPG compresses less efficiently. At 90% quality the photo looks the same; lower the quality to make the file smaller. The photo keeps its correct orientation. Live Photos and burst files contain several frames; the converter saves the main still photo.
Private, free and works offline
Safari can decode HEIC itself. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox, a free decoder is downloaded the first time you convert a HEIC file and then runs inside your browser. Either way, your photos are converted in memory on your phone or computer and never sent to a server. To avoid the problem in future, you can set an iPhone to save photos as JPG: Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible.
