What a resignation letter should include
A good resignation letter is short and factual. It names your job title and employer, says clearly that you are resigning, gives the date of the letter, states the notice period and your last working day, and is signed by you. A reason is optional; you do not have to explain why you are leaving. Many people also offer to help with the handover and thank their employer, which helps when you need a reference or an experience certificate later. Keep the tone polite even if you are leaving because of a problem; a resignation letter is a formal record, not the place for complaints.
Notice period in the UAE
Under the UAE labour law, Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, either side may end an unlimited employment contract by giving written notice. The notice period is the one agreed in the contract and must be at least 30 days and not more than 90 days. You are expected to keep working during the notice period. If you leave without serving it, you may have to pay your employer compensation equal to your wage for the notice period or the part you did not serve, unless you both agree to shorten or waive it. Hand the letter in by a method you can prove, such as email or a signed copy with the date of receipt.
Resigning in Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, check the notice period in your contract first. The amendments to the Saudi labour law that came into force in February 2025 changed the minimum notice periods and set rules on how a resignation is accepted, and the rules differ for fixed-term and indefinite contracts. Put your resignation in writing, keep proof of the date you submitted it, and follow up with HR on the steps for your contract and iqama. If anything is unclear, ask the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development or a qualified adviser before you resign.
After you resign: gratuity and final settlement
When you leave, your final settlement usually includes your last salary, payment for unused annual leave and your end-of-service gratuity. In the UAE, gratuity depends on your basic salary and years of service, and the employer should pay what you are owed within 14 days of the contract ending. Use our UAE gratuity calculator to estimate the amount before you hand in the letter, so you know what to expect and can check the settlement when it comes.
